A refreshing range of quarry

Trophy and sporting hunting

Hobson Hunts give the discerning sporting gun the chance to experience a variety of quarry that is mirrored in the varied terrain in which it is found.

Be it the exhausted elation of a successful chamois stalk, the thrill of bringing down a large wild boar or the challenge of fast moving quail. Finding something new, exciting and refreshingly different is what makes shooting abroad so much fun.

Game Birds

Capercaillie (Tetrao Urogallus L.)
Season: 15th April to 15th May
In Bulgaria the Capercaillie is treated as a trophy species. Subsequently it is shot with a rifle. Early morning stalking over two to three days is the best way to a successful capercaillie shoot.

Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) & Goose (Anas Albifrons)
Season: 1st October to 31st January
Between the northern edge of the Black Sea coast and the Danube river many wild duck and geese, mainly mallard and greater white-fronted, gather en-route to southern winter feeding.

Guinea Fowl (Numida Meleagris L.)
Season: 1st October to 31st January
Along with the wild turkey, guinea fowl have been introduced to give the sporting gun a variety of exotic bird species.

Partridge (Alectoris Graeca Cypriotes)
Season: 1st October to 30th November
Both Rock Partridge and Red-Legged Partridge are available to shoot and bags of 20 birds per gun are possible each day.

Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus)
Season: 1st October to 31st January
With birds currently reaching as much as fifty pounds each in the British Isles, Bulgaria offers an affordable way to enjoy shooting Pheasant.

Quail (Coturnix Coturnix)
Season: 15th August to 30th October
The quail is a thrilling bird to shoot. It is done along side pointer dogs and requires quick reactions from the gun.

Snipe (Gallinago Gallinago)
Season: 15th August to 28th February
As in the British Isles, the snipe is a resident and a migratory bird to Bulgaria. It is found in small numbers, only in wetland areas.

Turtle Dove (Streptopelia Turtur)
Season: 15th August to 30th October
Dove is a quarry that is excellent to shoot alongside Pigeon. Though it may be shot in it own right.

Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo L.)
Season: 1st October to 28th February

It is a unique experience to shoot a wild turkey. Certainly an interesting interlude to the Pheasant season in the British Isles.

Woodcock (Scolopax Rusticola)
Season: 15th August to 28th February
The woodcock is largely nocturnal, spending most of the day in dense cover. It is best shot walked-up.

Wood Pigeon (Columba Palumbus)
Season: 15th August to 28th February
Pigeon can provide very exciting shooting.

Trophy Hunting

Chamois (Rupicapra Rupicapra L.)
Season: Male - 10th April to 10th May and 1st December to 15th January
Female - 15th September to 31st October
In the Balkans the chamois population is found at lower altitudes than else where in the world. This makes it a quarry that still requires a fit gun but, is not exclusively for the 'super-man' hunter. Trophy records in the region are 118.50 CIC points. Chamois is well suited for combining with wild boar, mouflon and capercallie.

Mouflon
(Ovis Musimon Pall.)
Season: All Year
A regional trophy record of 95.6 cm (240.05 CIC points) has been achieved. Hobson Hunts expects trophies of over 70 cm. As mouflon are found in the same mountain ranges as the chamois it is recommended that these species are combined.

Wild Boar
(Sus. Scrofa L.)
Season: All Year
Bulgaria's national record trophy of 27.1 cm (158.20 CIC points) is also the second biggest in the world!

The most successful wild boar shoots are done by the light of a full-moon. Driven and stalked wild boar shooting is offered by Hobson Hunts.

The three European deer species are also shoot with Hobson Hunts: Fallow Deer (Cervus Dama L.), Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus L.) and Roe Deer (Capreolus Capreolus L.).

Hobson Hunts also offers the adventurous gun: European Bison (Bison Bonasus L.), European Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos L.), Jackal (Canis Aureus L.), Nutria (Myocastor Coypus Mol), Pine Martin (Martes Foina L.), Pollcat (Mustela Putorius L.), Tibetan Yak (Bos Mutus P.) and Wolf (Canis Lupus L.).
